The AI Economy Is Global: 55 Companies Outside the US Worth Knowing

"The US still builds most of the AI economy. But the most surprising names on the AI250 increasingly come from somewhere else."

The AI250 tracks 250 companies across 18 countries. 195 are American, which reflects where capital and compute are concentrated, but the other 55 are where much of the year's most interesting movement has come from. This post replaces our earlier Geography of AI and Europe Deep Dive pieces with one current view of the map.

All AI250 ranks, scores, and counts in this post are as of October 19, 2026. The live rankings update every night.

The Map in Numbers

Outside the US, the AI250 includes the United Kingdom (10 companies), Canada (8), Germany (6), China (5), India (4), France (4), Israel (3), Sweden (3), Denmark, Finland, and the UAE (2 each), and the Netherlands, Norway, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Hong Kong (1 each).

The headline is quality, not quantity. Non-US companies hold four of the top 11 positions: DeepSeek (#4, China), Cohere (#7, Canada), 4Paradigm (#10, China), and Z.ai (#11, China).

Europe: The Strongest Quarter in Four Years

European venture investment reached $28.4 billion in Q3 2026, its eighth straight quarterly increase and a sixteen-quarter high, per KPMG. Crunchbase data shows AI captured about three-quarters of European funding, the highest share it has recorded.

Mistral (#21) led the way with a €3 billion Series D in September at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. Samsung led the round, with participation from EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund, BlackRock-managed funds, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Mistral now serves more than 125 enterprises, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. Sovereignty is a commercial strategy, not a slogan: European enterprises and governments want frontier capability they can host and govern locally.

Defense and infrastructure are Europe's other breakout stories. Helsing (#95, Germany) raised $1.8 billion, and UK-based Nscale (#141) raised a $3.36 billion convertible note to build AI data centers. Beyond them, the AI250's European roster runs deep: SAP (#25, Germany), Stability AI (#41, UK), Synthesia (#46, UK), Qdrant (#53, Germany), Black Forest Labs (#58, Germany), Lovable (#70, Sweden), Weaviate (#91, Netherlands), and n8n (#98, Germany).

One European name is gone. Aleph Alpha, which featured heavily in our earlier coverage, merged into Cohere and is no longer scored independently.

China: Fewer Companies, Stronger Signals

China has just five companies in the AI250, but they score high. DeepSeek (#4) shipped V4 in April and leads the index on Talent & Research among foundation model labs, at 9.6. Z.ai (#11) listed in Hong Kong in January. Moonshot AI (#15) released its open-weight Kimi K3 model this year and raised $3.5 billion in Q3. It's reportedly preparing a Hong Kong IPO at up to $50 billion. Chinese labs have made open-weight releases a core strategy, and that has given them outsized global developer mindshare.

Sovereign AI: Governments as Anchor Customers

In the Gulf, AI is national infrastructure. The UAE's TII (#37), maker of the Falcon models, and G42 (#52) anchor the region, alongside Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN (#188). In India, Krutrim (#19) and Sarvam AI (#47) are building models for Indian languages and markets. Japan's Sakana AI (#33) is pursuing nature-inspired model research with strong backing from Japanese industry.

Why the Map Matters for Buyers and Investors

Geography now shapes risk as much as opportunity. Data residency requirements, export controls on advanced chips, and divergent regulation (the EU AI Act, state laws in the US, China's model registration rules) all affect who can sell what to whom. A company's Bluescore tells you about its signals; its address increasingly tells you which markets it can actually serve.
